Why We’re Committed to Supporting Nonprofits
By Ayman Sharrouf
Three friends, united by a shared vision, met in the streets during protests calling for change. We crossed paths in social activities, united by different causes but with one goal: social work and justice.
Let me introduce us
Janine Ayoub: Although Janine initially graduated as a pharmacist, she shifted her focus to public health. Throughout her career, she found herself drawn to education, youth development, and inclusivity.
Ali Zaraket: A filmmaker and documentary producer, Ali is deeply invested in social issues, political change, and fighting corruption. He believes that understanding and learning from our history is essential for creating positive change.
ِAnd me the writer of this article, Ayman Sharouf: I’m a journalist since 2005, I have been involved in social movements and political activism advocating for change and fighting corruption. My passion lies in human rights, raising awareness of their importance.
We three often found ourselves together, sharing ambitions and attending numerous protests, especially those in 2019. After the Beirut port explosion, we all eventually left for Istanbul, seeking some peace and stability. There, we met again, with one question on our minds: How can we continue our efforts for change, knowing that our previous attempts had not succeeded, often due to factors beyond our control?
Change can start small
In the midst of deep discussions about what could be done, we realized that the previous phase had taught us something valuable: change can start small, in narrow circles, and through accumulation, it can grow to achieve the impact we seek, no matter how long it takes. From our individual experiences, the choice became clear: supporting the efforts of impactful businesses and nonprofits.
But why do we believe this approach is the right one, and why have we made it a commitment?
Achieving social change:
Social enterprises and nonprofit organizations are the social innovators are often at the forefront of efforts to bring about social change. By supporting them, individuals can contribute to addressing social injustice, promoting human rights, and improving the living conditions of systemically exploited communities.
Over the years, the impact of nonprofits has been profound.
A report from Global Partnership for Education highlights that civil society organizations, including NGOs, are crucial in delivering education to Underserved communities, reaching millions of children in conflict zones and remote areas. Moreover, according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), during the COVID-19 pandemic, local NGOs delivered vital health services and distributed food to millions of people in need, particularly in low-income countries
Direct impact:
Nonprofits and civil society organizations usually operate at the grassroots level, meaning their work can lead to tangible products, such as vaccination rates, and it could be an intangible; i.e. change in knowledge, attitude or behavior. In both cases, nonprofits have the capacity and mission to lead towards change in our communities.
Independence:
Most of these organizations are independent of governments and profit-driven entities, allowing them to pursue long-term goals without being influenced by political or economic pressures.
Expertise and Specialization:
Nonprofits often possess expertise in specific areas such as education, health, human rights, and the environment. Supporting them means leveraging this expertise to achieve shared goals and benefit various communities in diverse ways.
Accountability and transparency:
Many civil society organizations uphold high standards of transparency and accountability, providing confidence that any support given is truly directed toward achieving the declared objectives.
Building networks of support and solidarity:
By supporting these organizations, individuals can join a vast network of people who share the same values and principles, fostering cooperation and solidarity in pursuit of social justice.
